Documentation Sciences: the State of Premises in Spain

Librarianship as a modern discipline has reached a watershed. Today, it is time to ask the most radical, fundamental and almost Kantian questions : what must librarians do? What are their perspectives? How and with what objectives are they to work and to research in libraries? This article attempts to delineate a field of study and of research appropriate to librarianship. It identifies those responsible for the research mission, and pleads for university professors in the domain of information and documentation to work in concert with librarians. Finally, it attempts to describe the difficulties currently challenging research in librarianship in Spain, and the objectives which must direct its evolution in the present context.
