Against the ideal library

The analysis of methods and global processes of the programmation of libraries shows that near the normative aspects, they are conceived less in relation to a preexisting model than through approximations, regrets, amendments... It seems that the « invention » does not finish with the inauguration by the local authorities. The library is diverted by its own users, like a manufactured tool, cobbled up to be improved, adapted, or diverted. The invention is here the concern of the use, of the permanent and always unsatisfied investigation. What lessons can be drawn from these observations ? Couldn't the conception of the « library of tomorrow » be done more in a work carried out on the fringe of normalization and apart from every presupposed model ? Isn't it the sign that the library develops itself towards new uses which express themselves according to the publics' diversions, but also according to the advances of the communication and information technologies the most important of which is yet to come ?
