Mutuel recognition of professional qualifications in the European Community

The author explains the response in UK by the library and information science (LIS) profession to the European Community Directive on the Mutual recognition of professional qualifications which has become effective as from January 1991. She outlines the system of professional education in the UK while pointing out that Britain already accepts graduate level qualifications from colleagues in EEC member states. However, in order to maintain its very high standards, the Library Association is paying special attention to the way in which its own professional qualification - Chartered status - would be awwarded to foreign colleagues.
