Automated organization of the Library of the European University Institute in Florence

The European University Institute Library is one of the few fully automated integrated libraries in Europe. Users' requests, automatically recorded, are used to produce orders or interlibrary loan requests. All library operations such as acquisition control, invoices or bibliographic description are processed by the computer and when looking for a book, users have automatic access to the central files where all data are stocked according to their function. The library operates with TRIBU (i.e. Processing of interactive relations between data base and user), a French data base management system for mini-computers which enables the user to work on terminals located throughout the library. A resource-sharing network is being tested and will soon be operational between major libraries in Tuscany
