How the concept of « production-distribution system » way represent a valid approach of current publishing

With a larger definition of the book and the drastic changes which occur to-day in publishing, it seems necessary to define a specific methodology for the study of contemporary publishing. Linear and theoretic communication schemes do not explain actual production and distribution processes. However, from approximate figures given by the average annual number of copies of the main categories of books according to the publihers' list, one way bring together some interesting results. There appears to be three important production-distribution systems, for smale, average and large number of copies. Average sales price, type of production-distribution and presentation of the book allow for a finer analysis of these systems. An underground production-distribution system should be taken into account when trying to present an exhaustive panorama of contemporary French publishing ; in order to evaluate the state of publishing as a whole, each area should be assessed
