Archivists, information specialists, librarians: competences, missions and common purposes

Faced with the development of multi-media, archivists, librarians and information specialists have an essential political role to play by working together for the future of democracy, culture and society. Three major challenges should reunite these careers which have only come to light recently: the preservation of diversity faced with the concentration of power due to the industralisation and commercialization of communication tools; the fight against the flood of ephemeral information against the benefit of its long term transmission; the mastery of meta-languages which enable the management of methods of access to knowledge.
