The unity of the profession
La Direction des bibliothèques et de la lecture publique (The Department for Books and Libraries), created within the Ministry of Education in 1945, was closed down in 1975. This loss provoked a strong emotional response from librarians: the unity of the profession was at risk. The dual objective of the article is to relate and attempt to explain this episode.
