E-books and The University of Texas

The University of Texas has purchased over 10,000 e-books from several different vendors. This article recounts the reasons for these purchases, and the experiences encountered as the e-books have been mainstreamed into library operations. A number of existing e-book models are compared and discussed, with the author concluding that web-based HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) e-book models hold the most current promise for academic libraries, while e-book models based on hand-held devices and PDF (Portable Document Format) may find favor in the consumer market.
