The Libraries of Paris: a New Approach to Statistics

The Observatoire permanent de la lecture publique à Paris (OPLPP) has published a first collection of information on the inter-institutional reading services to the public of Paris for 1996 and 1997 (including public and university libraries): hours, numbers, budget, premises, meeting places, collections, acquisitions, electronic offerings, frequentation, loans, on the spot communication. This article is centred on the data from public libraries: analyzed herein are the means, documentary holdings, activities. Parisian holdings are compared with those of other large French and foreign cities.
