The National Library of Sarajevo and Bosnian Libraries

The destruction of the National Library and the University of Sarajevo in August 1992 has become the symbol of the systematic devastation of Bosnian heritage. Only 10 % of collections have been recovered. Five years on, the library still finds itself in a very difficult situation. It has tried hard to reorganize its functions, and has begun to install itself in a new building in September 1997. The funds gathered by Unesco to contribute to the restoration of the library have risen to 500,000 dollars. Many other Bosnian libraries have also been destroyed or damaged and lack credit, material, and trained personnel. They need an increase in the presence of the librarianship of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
