Success of Public Libraries : Demands to Be Clarified

Public lending libraries are at an important point in their history. On the one hand, they have achieved brilliant success because they correspond to a model of modernity (large communication, freedom to consult documents of all kinds). On the other hand, this success creates new problems (heterogeneity of the public and of partners, quantitive pressure, etc.). From this success there arose expectations among librarians, sometimes anxious, polarized around three issues : the desire for an encouraging policy from public bodies, the creation of an effective network, the reaffirmation of the identity of the librarian.
