A question of education: teaching and democracy

The article argues that profound changes in the education system over the past forty years in the name of democratisation have in fact led to greater inequality. The egalitarianism that is the watchword of so many educationalists seems to led directly to teaching to the lowest common denominator, devaluing the notion of culture in favour of “skills sets” and meaning it is impossible for schools to be the drivers of social mobility they once were.
