What place do multimedia libraries hold in the film market?

When it comes to providing access to films, multimedia libraries face competition from other sources such as cinemas and video clubs. However, over the years since the Direction du Livre et de la Lecture (a quango set up to promote the book sector) launched its pioneering programme, libraries have developed their own niche, particularly focusing on collections of documentaries, together with new services such as lending and organising showings. These are complementary rather than competitive in a context where legal obligations are especially tight.
