Great changes are afoot in the Rennes library system. Libraries - the heart of the world-wide virtual information network - are faced with fast-paced, far-reaching developments in social and cultural practices. At the same time, administrative responsibility for libraries shifts back and forth from the municipal to the inter-municipal level, while public spending will doubtless be restricted for some time to come. Librarians have no choice but to develop new models and practices. Librarians in Rennes and the wider urban area are working on plans to put the library system at the heart of new policies promoting reading.
