All roads lead to digitisation: long-term archiving, mass digitisation, and digital co-operation at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France

This article draws on the Bibliothèque Nationale de France’s decision to set up a permanent archive of digital heritage collections in order to shed light on the library’s policy on the transmission of the digital heritage. The policy is based on a commonality of reference and the long-term archive system known as SPAR (système de préservation et d’archivage réparti); on mass digitisation carried out by service providers, requiring rigorous lines of procedure and quality control; and the main thrust of development in terms of digital co-operation, such as concerted digitisation policies, shared presentation of search results, and mutualised conservation programmes.
