An Ocean of pictures: standardization, cooperation, networks

In the field of film, documentary standardization is slowed down by a number of different obstacles notably by the multiplicity of the players: institutional cooperation, standards’ agencies, distributors, copyright holders, content specia-lists (film archives); or by the methodology of information provision (libra-ries). Efforts to standardize came about first from the Anglo-American area and influenced the standardization of bibliographical information (1970-1990). Digitization and the distribution on line have subsequently favoured different enterprises of identification and standardization of information (“dematerialized”), which converge today, principally towards collective tools of sign-posting and joint models of description and indexing.
