User training in higher education: the state of play and future prospects

An assessment of the implementation of the MTU (Methodology for academic work), introduced in 1997, has been mainly positive. The Department for Higher Education supported the work of the university libraries, thanks to the Urfist network (Regional Departments for Scientific and Technical Information Training); to the setting up of Formist and to the encouragement in the use of new technology in information and communication. However, the mechanism has shown its limitations as far as collaboration between librarians and teaching staff is concerned. In today's favourable context for the passage through LMD (bachelor's degree, master's degree, PHD), several ways of working are open to the university libraries: the validation of the field of training in information; the improvement in the content of training; the sharing of experience from the local to the national level.
