Rameau: assessment and perspectives

In the 1980s, the computerization of catalogues and the ambition to establish collective catalogues lead to an increase in a need for standardization, in particular in the choice of a unique authority subject index. The 25th anniversary of the birth of the Rameau indexing language, which most French libraries use, is an opportunity to take stock and to propose enhancements so that it may better respond to the needs of indexers and users. Work on terminology should be given priority, without, however, neglecting semantic and syntax levels.
