What are youngsters' practical experiences of reading? In addition to regular investigations into the cultural practices of the French, several important studies have been undertaken over about ten years, from which it appears that juvenile reading is a practice that is not only cultural, but also educational and user-friendly, making it the object of symbolic and social tensions. This article synthesises our knowledge in this area.
