Library and information professionals are experiencing many changes in their work situation and educators are examining ways of making academic courses and continuing professional education more relevant to the needs of students. The context in which LIS education is delivered is discussed. LIS departments in universities offer both undergraduate and postgraduate initial qualifications and many offer career development masters programmes. CILIP accredits the courses which meet its criteria and also offers a programme of continuing professional development. Other professional bodies and training agencies also offer CPD. Some concerns are raised about content of programmes: knowledge management, leadership skills and level of traditional skills and knowledge.
