A chain of treatment of digital documents: characteristics and execution

Digital documents will have increasing importance in the documentary output of libraries, but their handling is very different from that of bibliographical information. While awaiting the completion of information systems such as PELLEAS, it is possible to organise the initial stages of the chain of treatment, in partnership with authors and publishers. Work on the structure and the metadata of the documents will make it possible to produce XML files, made up of all the necessary elements for their access, handling and preservation. The library is the organisation best adapted to this development of a documentary base; and library staff are the most competent in the handling of information structure. However, the organisation of a complete chain of treatment should be planned in collaboration with various partners.
