The Chips Are Invading the Library: New Technology for the Identification of Documents

Several libraries around the world, notably in the United States, have chosen RFID technology (digital identifier) for the identification of documents, instead and in place of bar codes. The day has come for several projects in France. RFID facilitates the management of collections (inventory, re-calls, anti-theft), as well as the management of loans and returns. Putting it to work necessitates a comparative analysis of the costs and advantages; it must also be assessed in relation to the possibility of the automation of certain functions.
