The Registration Rites of the Reader

Registration at the library is a privileged moment of contact between the establishment and its public and gives rise to a certain number of rites. The author of this article attempts to explain why these rites - indispensable for the librarian - can be perceived by users as a difficult barrier to cross. The disquiet comes, in large part, from the inequality of the transaction, in matters of statute, objective and attitude, between the personnel and the would-be reader.
