Media Revolutions in History: Towards a Comparative Approach

Media revolutions in the course of history (writing, typography, digital) arouse hopes and fears that are not without analogy. Here we have tried to sketch out the logic at work in these successive developments and thus in the social utopias which they have given rise to. The computerized present has been clear for a long time; and this suggests that any state of uncertainty should be moderated as much as dreaded.
