Librarianship and Information Sciences in Sweden

Librarianship and information sciences are going to constitute a university discipline throughout the Scandinavian countries. The study programmes intended for librarians have contributed to this evolution in important ways, as have research activities and the new thesis programme organized by the universities. This article proposes to describe the current situation and the orientation, which has emerged over the last twenty or thirty years, the better to situate the possibilities open to researchers. Equally, the recent decisions which have allowed the research organization to develop are evoked, and the activities pursued in this area are described, particularly studies made on the reader and the history of libraries, the utilization of information, documentary research and the exploitation of documents.
