Automation, free access and user service : an experience at the library of Paris XII

Since 1987, the multidisciplinary library of the University Paris XII at Créteil has conduced a dynamic development of its public services. Particular emphasis is put on « freedom of access », not only to the collections, but also to the larger world of knowledge, through computerized catalogues and CD-ROM workstations. Experience, self-evaluation and several library-user polls show that full freedom of access, far from reducing staff intervention, still requires it, though under a different form.
