Access to documents in university libraries

The circular of July 88 about acquisitions in university libraries, interuniversity libraries and university documentation centers underlines the double information calling of these institutions : first, enable and facilitate direct access to documents on the spot by a physical classification; then provide access to whatever information, even remote, through various techniques - this last point being closely linked to cataloging problems. The recommendations draw conclusions from the gap between classification and analysis which has been widening for 25 years. In order to facilitate classification, they commend a new type of inventory which combines a chronological element with a systematic element (reinforced in comparison with 1962); in addition to these elements, a " position letter " indicates the place of the document. As for document analysis, it should be more and more complex in order to offer a multiple information. Preference is given to the Dewey classification and flexibility is recommended within this frame so as to meet the public's needs.
