University libraries yesterday and to-morrow An interview of André Miquel

Discussion about the report on university libraries. This report lies within the framework of an intervention policy for the first and the second " cycle " held by the minister of National education. It asserts the essential part the library must play on the university campus, as a channel for distribution of the scientific and academic publications and as a tool for research. It recommends document mobility : the library should not try to be comprehensive any more or settled for good, but offer special collections related to the programmes and researches of the parent university (even if it means a change in the collections) ; mobility of staff also - representatives should not hold the same appointment more than five years - as well as salary raising and job promotion. The report plans an interdepartmental council for libraries (consisting of 12 to 15 members) who will be responsible for all types of libraries in France ; it will define a policy with all the necessary means of action, and will maintain a control over it. Two projects are emerging : - a silo for books in order to relieve saturated libraries and get rid of copies ; - one library for all students, relieving the Bibliothèque publique d'information and the National library, with a special emphasis on document reproduction.
