The Study of Library Science : The Program at the University of Cologne as a Model

The first German university to incorporate a specific program of study for library science into its curricula was the University of Cologne. For the purposes of instruction, the field of library science is divided into five areas : library theory, general librarianship, library technology, library history, and forms of publications and materials used for publishing. Thc contents and structural subdivisions of these areas are delineated. Various degrees, elective programs, and corresponding University regulations for the study of library science at the University of Cologne are treated as a suggested model for the future development of similar programs of study in Germany and other countries
