El último lector
The Mexican author David Toscana’s novel El ùltimo lector features a librarian who believes that the answer to everything is to be found in a book. Libraries can be a refuge, like the library of Punta Delgada in the Azores, “the spruce, ultra-modern neighbour to an old baroque church”. “Enigmatic names” do not stop people from becoming regular readers, since libraries are “places for pure pleasure, free from all forms of obligation, exonerated from all duty: they are true sites of emancipation”.
