Education for library and information work in the United Kingdom

This paper notes some of the recent changes in professional practice, and how they are affecting our view of how librarians should be educated and trained. For example, many departments of library and information studies now include course modules from other academic departments ; some academic libraries are providing their own, award-bearing educational courses ; and some courses which are relevant to modern library and information practice are being provided by other kinds of department, such as Departments of Management or Informatics. The paper discusses the nature of the education which is needed for librarians now, describes the new UK system for vocational qualifications, and discusses the impact of this on traditional education and training
