The concept of the digital collection

Does the concept of a digital collection make sense? Digital collections might look like other kinds of holdings at first sight. Yet in practice, building up and managing such collections calls for a new skills set in terms of selection, labelling, and conservation, while at the same time requiring the use of specific forms of technology. The authors analyse the new organisation and training requirements involved in creating a digital collection, and conclude that the advent of digital media means that library staff will have to adapt to an entirely new professional culture.
