The school library: from 'library cupboard' to BCD

The article outlines the history of school libraries in France: the decree of 1862 which stipulates that "a school library be established in every public primary school" and that "books are to be stored in a 'library cupboard'"; the original text of 1989 which defines the BCD; the reading projects and programmes which have been set up since 1989; and, finally, the inclusion of children's literature in the syllabus 2002.
