The French book in the Czech Republic

A quick glance at the place of the French book in Czech bookshops leaves one thinking that it counts for little in a publishing scene marked by the huge number of publishers, the weakness of the retail sector and the omnipresence of Anglo-Saxon productions. However, Czech cultural life holds some pleasant surprises: a Book Fair, bookshop initiatives, Internet sites... Besides, the existence of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs programme of assistance for publications makes possible some influence on the presence of famous French names in literature and the humanities. French production is getting back to the position it was in before 1938.
