The author, the book and the reader in the works of Pierre Bourdieu

Pierre Bourdieu is well known for his works about the world of scholarship, less for those about literature. His writings in this area are examined here by comparing them with those of H.-R. Jauss. The sociologist highlights the social role of language and the importance of investment in it by authors in order to dominate the literary scene. He is less sensitive than analysts about the induction of the reader into the active - and often creative - role. Does the time given to reading mean the renunciation of action or a moment when some kind of renewal of human relations is being played out?
