Conservatory libraries

Backed up by an exhaustive enquiry carried out in 1993 and 1996, and considering that today's practice is still virtually unchanged, the author presents an accurate picture of the situation of conservatory libraries. These are characterised by their rarity - scarcely one regional conservatory with national status in every two, and only some national schools of music, have been equipped with them - and striking inequalities. They are however essential, as they are in other types of institution (university libraries, documentation and information centres), for the educational life of the institutions. In addition, since the conservatories link the whole territory closely together, the presence of libraries in them is vital as reliable centres of professional musical documentation in the regions.
