Structuring of the knowledge and organisation of collections in the virtual library

The traditional methods and instruments for structuring knowledge and information organisation are still only little used in the virtual library. Does this mean that the encyclopaedic and specialised classification schemes cannot fulfil their role in the new information environment? Are the new tools for the systematic organisation of virtual collections as effective and user-friendly as is claimed? Some examples may help to shed light on these questions, to which no definitive answer can yet be given.
