The German Approach to Management Tools

In Germany, over the course of the last decade, we have sought to apply management methods in the domain of the library. Enrolled in this evolution, the Bertelsmann Foundation has embarked on a project of "comparison of the exploitation of public libraries" for which it has created and tested new management tools aimed at improving the performance of the service and efficiency of the means employed. The principle of comparison has allowed each participating library to look beyond its own walls and profit from the experience of others. This article presents the principal axes of the project and refers them to a publication by the Bertelsmann Foundation presenting tools, methods and results.
