The evolution of the education of library professionals in the United States

To determine the extent of the evolution of the education of library professionals in the USA, it is helpful to look at both the statements of competencies desired by the employers and the profession as well as reviewing the competencies as reflected in the curricula of library schools. Library education programs are examined with special attention paid to the impact of new technology and public social and political concerns on the design of new curricula. Finally, the author speculates on the future direction of library education in the US, with an attempt to predict the typical curriculum in the year 2000 and beyond.
