A shared preservation tool : the Technical centre for the book

The jam of the stacks of university and academic libraries in Paris and its suburbs led the French Ministry of education to plan a deposit library in the suburbs of Paris, Marne-la-Vallée, at 31 km from Paris. This deposit library will have a storage capacity of a hundred linear kilometres, that is ten years of bookstocks growth. This service will concern books, serials, dissertations and bound newspapers with a low frequency rate. Documents will be transmitted by shuttles within 24 hours. On the same site, the Bibliothèque de France will have complementary stacks and especially important workshops for disacidifying, microfilming, electronic storage and also for disinfection. This proximity will allow to treat a part of the documents of research libraries of Paris and its suburbs. The opening is expected in March-April 1994.
