Bibliotheca Alexandrina : a library for the third millenium born from the ashes of Antiquity

After briefly recalling the historical and cultural context of the city of Antiquity and the role of its library, the author considers the declining city of today and wonders if the myth can really be recreated. In contrast to libraries of national character, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina project poses particular problems of political, financial and organizational nature. Hence, the emphasis given to non-technical aspects of the project. The building of the new Alexandrina is explained, as well as its organization into two divisions and six departements. In the context of international coopération, the role of France is given as an example.
