The assistant librarians from 1950 to 1990 Survey about the regional lending libraries, the « BPI » and the National library

This article gives the results of the survey about the public reading State assistant librarians achieved by the Direction du livre et de la lecture on January 1989. As in the establishments which depend on the National education ministry, the assistant librarians who work in the regional lending libraries, the « BPI » and the National library have generally not only « technical » responsabilities. Their tasks express rather well the missions of the establishment where they work. In the regional lending libraries, most of them take part in the choice of the acquisitions and the management of collections (95 %). They train book deposit people and manage little teams. In the « BPI », 92 % help the users, 95 % do bibliographic searching. For the National library, the most important task is the bibliographic function (90 %), and the constitution of the computerised catalogue is important too (50 %).
