Guidelines for bibliographic information

Publication of extracts of the first stage of the guidelines for bibliographic information, developed by the ministry of Culture; it is a clarification of the situation in public libraries. The study presents the main actors of the diffusion (the National library, the Cercle de la librairie, LIBRA cooperative network, automated libraries reselling their catalogues), the services provided and their pricing. The needs of the libraries and of the local elected representatives are not much compatible and concern specific products. Three types of needs are coming out : simplified entries, immediately available for acquisitions; more complete entries, for current functioning and collection description; setting-up of the online catalogue of the library. The entry market, not clearly defined, is hardly organized and the need for standardization is not yet prevailing. There is not enough coordination between the institutional partners, while initial and continuing education in automation is insufficient. The second stage of the guidelines will be worked out in the context of the coming Great big library project and will include various intervention patterns.
